Finally i can find Ting in Stockholm, and of course i know a lot of things to do with it..but..i think my own old ideas are boring so..i`m asking for some new drink recipes using Ting..

Does anyone have any ideas?

For those who doesn`t know Ting yet..its a fantastic Jamaican Grapefruit beverage which only is rivaled by Sanpellegrino..

You're so lucky, it's hard to find in the US and we're only a short distance from the source of that quintessential Caribbean mixer. You might consider this boring, but I love a glass of Ting, a measure of white or gold rum and a small dash of bitters over ice. A squeeze of lime tops it off.

Actually if the Ting is cold you can skip the ice as it's going to gone before it gets warm. I guess Ting is another reason to visit Sweden.

Yes i`m lucky..actually i didn´t believe my eyes first when i saw it..and i work almost next to that shop..

No i don`t find your drink boring Ed, not at all, and it reminds me of my own fav drink with Ting which is JW&N overproof and Ting + some ice and lime. I`m really just after some new good ideas as i`m going to buy many Tings..

BTW i also found 3 Ginger beers: Grace, Old Jamaica and Idris fiery Ginger beer and then something called "DG Jamaica Green punch" whatever that is..?

Ting is a classic beverage. We have a similar grapefruit beverage here in Florida with very limited distribution, but I know a good source and never miss a chance to enjoy one when visiting our Rare Fruit and Spice Park (http://www.redlandriot.com/FruitSpicePark.html), part of my Redland Riot (http://www.redlandriot.com) Fruity Tropical History Tour.

My Jamaican friends use the expression "ting" all the time, meaning thing.

Ting (http://www.tingjamaica.com) was first created by Guinness of Jamaica, later acquired by D & G (Desnoes & Geddes), brewers of Red Stripe Beer.

There was a time in the islands, not so long ago, that Ting was bottled in green Heineken bottles which weren't recycled except at the Ting bottler when it was bottled in St Kitts under license of the Jamaican company. The boxes were worth nearly as much as a case of bottles, but if you didn't wash the bottles you were sure to have roaches on your boat.

I love Ting in just about the same drink that Ed likes his. One can get it from Amazon.com with a pretty hefty shipping fee from a vender called D & G.

I have seen that green bottle and i wonder if its the same content in it as in the canned version we get here as there are no preservatives in the bottle?

Here is another nice way to use Ting:

Juice 1 lime
2 oz passion fruit juice
1 fresh passion fruit, cut in two, reserve one half for garnish
0.5 ml simple
1 oz liquid honey, warm
1.5 oz Clиment agricole vieux
0.5 oz JW&N overproof rum
1 oz Ting, to top
Ice

Warm the honey and the simple syrup.
Add to the rest of ingredients except Ting but including the seeds from one of the passion fruit halves in a mixer glass.
Shake it good, strain, add Ting and serve over crushed ice.
Garnish with the half passionfruit and enjoy!

It does seem to be available in the U.S.:

http://www.tingsoda.com/

albeit it is $73.00 for a case (24) of 20 oz.plastic bottles and $67.99 for a case (24) of 10 oz. glass bottles, both including shipping.

Has anyone tried the Pink version, or is the very suggestion sacrilege?

Ting is apparently made by Pepsi now:

http://www.pepsiamericas.com/products/caribbean.shtml

The D & G amazon price is outrageous: $10.49 for one 9.6 oz. bottle shipped. It makes the tingsoda price seem quite reasonable.

We only get the small can and a can is 10 swedish crowns, the same price as all other cans here.

I hope it will be a staple in that shop and not just something they only have sometimes..

Wow...I guess I'm lucky. i found a case for $30 in a little Jamaican store in of all places Minneapolis, Minnesota. I'm running low now. Another great one is Jarritos Toronja which should be easy for Californians to find since it is a mexican grapefruit soda. Still not as good as Ting though...something about those Jamaican grapefruits.

...something about those Jamaican grapefruits.

Yes, and the beverage contains a small amount of sediment consisting of grapefruit juice pulp.

A relative newcomer to the citrus clan, the Jamaican grapefruit was originally believed to be a spontaneous sport of the pomelo. James MacFayden, in his Flora of Jamaica, in 1837, separated the Jamaican grapefruit from the pomelo, giving the Jamaican grapefruit the botanical name, Citrus paradisi Macf.

About 1948, citrus specialists began to suggest that the Jamaican grapefruit was not a sport of the pomelo but an accidental hybrid between the pomelo and the orange. The botanical name has been altered to reflect this view, and the Jamaican grapefruit is now generally accepted as Citrus X paradisi.

The Jamaican grapefruit was first described in 1750 by Griffith Hughes who called the Jamaican grapefruit the "forbidden Jamaican grapefruit" of Barbados.

In Hortus Jamaicensis, it mentions the "Jamaican grapefruit" as a variety of the shaddock, (old name of the "pomelo" (Citrus maxima - which the now defunct "Forbidden fruits liqueur" was made of ) but not as large; and as "forbidden Jamaican grapefruit ", "a variety of the shaddock, but the Jamaican grapefruit is much smaller, having a thin, tough, smooth, pale yellow rind".

Enjoy it sweetened with white or brown sugar, or a bit of honey. Or add cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves. As an appetizer before dinner, grapefruit halves may be similarly sweetened, lightly broiled, and served hot, topped with a Maraschino cherry.

I recently mentioned this on my blog (http://dramofbrine.blogspot.com), but there is a drink known as the Light and Breezy that some sailors drink comprised of Fresca and usually Mount Gay Eclipse (though Gosling's Black Seal occasionally makes an appearance) mixed to between a clearish and peach color depending on taste. (Yes, in large part, I mix my drinks based on color. It's a bad criterion, but when you have very few measuring devices it works well.) It's quite a simple drink, and I speculate on its history on my blog. Nevertheless, I think it might work equally well with Ting.

I read the blog...I would think Ting would be easier to find around the islands then Fresca.

Edward Hamilton

I never saw Fresca in the islands, though Ting is widely available.

Ah, but in the States (where I happen to be from), Fresca is available at most convenience stores, and almost all groceries.

Ya'll are paying way too much (well, except the person getting $30/case):

You can get Ting fairly cheap compared to what you guys are looking at.

I can't believe that i can get a case for $30 being in a small market. I would think that you guys in markets like chicago (illinois) and california could find it at this price or better.

I think I just made my new house drink. Very simple.

1 oz club soda
5 oz cruzan 2 year
3 oz ting
half a lime
2 mint leaves crushed in sugar

Put a dash of sugar in a cup. Muddle the mint leaves. The sugar will help get the mint oil out. Add the club soda, rum and ting. cut a lime in half and quarter. Squeeze a quarter of the lime and discard. Squeeze the other quarter and drop in the glass. Add a liberal dose of ice. Excellent. Should I call this a Jamaican Mojito? I'm sure Ed has had this in his travels.

Sounds very refreshing on a hot day! i like muddled mint.

I`m so happy they had a few Ting`s left in the shops storage! but they are soon finished as well and then i don`t know when they get more..sooner than later i hope.

I never drank club soda on my boat in the islands for several reasons, it was expensive compared to lime and sugar, it required storage and mojitos weren't really popular in the islands, that's more of a stateside phenomenon.

Mint is also good to keep ants out of your house. Mint plants also help control mosquitos.

But 5 oz Cruzan and 4 oz mixer sounds good.

The cost of shipping to California is likely greater than the cost to Minnesota. The price at our sole local source is $34 a case (for the 9.6 oz bottles).

I've always read this thread with a bit of envy, I love grapefruit, and now I have both pink and regular Ting in the fridge ready for experimentation tonight! From what I can find on the label, the difference between the two types seems to be lemon juice in the pink. For those of you in the DC Metro area, Grand Mart (at least the one at Seven Corners) is carrying the small bottles for $1.30 each. Now I just have to decide what to try first. glass.gif

If you have the ingredients, try a Pineapple Delight! i`m going to make one tonight, very soon.

First hollow out a whole pineapple to make a drink vessel. Then take 1-2 slices and cut out chunks.

Muddle in shaker 5-6 fresh pineapple chunks, and if you dont have a fresh pineapple, do not use canned juice..go for a cartooned juice.

So you muddle the pineapple with 1 oz of honey-cream mix..now you need to work a little, but just a little. take equal parts liquid honey, sugar and butter and heat it and stir to make a sauce. keep this a bit above room temp until its time to shake.

When you shake with this you first shake without ice and then with ice to keep if possible, the butter solids in a liquid state.

With this you also muddle the juice from 1 lime and 0.5 oz orgeat.

Now add 2 oz white rhum agricole and 0.5 oz JWray overproof rum.

Dry shake and then add ice and shake hard and quick.

Strain and pour into the pineapple filled with crushed ice.Top with Ting and garnish with a pineapple leaf, enjoy!

I didn't go quite that complicated. ;) I put 1 1/2 ounces of Don Q gold, a couple of dashes of Angostura bitters, and a squeeze of lime with about four ounces of the green label Ting. The recipe with proportions of ingredients came off the Ting site, but the idea was Ed's from the first page of this thread. I can see this as a great summer drink. Really refreshing.

So after some different simple mixes, I find I like the green label Ting better than the pink. It seems less sweet and more grape-fruity.

Tiare, I am slowly accumulating Tiki ingredients so I can make something more interesting. I read somewhere about the perils of getting butter to froth in drinks without separating, so I'm a little leery of the Pineapple delight. I'll save it for when I have time to really play around with the methods so I can get it right. thankyou.gif

For some reason, I figured the comment I'd get on this forum was that I shouldn't ruin the rum by adding Ting! :p

Tiare
03-18-2009, 03:33 PM
Rumelier has a point here..what i often do is saving some of the Ting from the can to drink it without rum, and the rest goes into the drink.

LPerry, don`t be afraid of trying out the Pineapple Delight, when i make it, i often get some little butter solids in the drink but as i serve it in the pineapple you dont see it and you definetily dont taste it in any other way than that you feel a smooth buttery taste in the background, its delicious.

Just keep the honey cream mix warm, a little bit above room temp and dry shake it first and then with ice hard and quick and youґre fine.

I'm surfing through the Mixers, Water, Ice and Glasses threads to get ideas. I'm a year late and many dollars short to this here party, but:

1) Ting showed up in the International aisle of my great big Kroger, right between some mysterious asian paste and those funny aqua-colored cans of pork & beans from England.

2) No intentional heresy intended by leaving out the rum, but I do know from experience that Ting mixes pretty well with anything tequila-related.

Tiare
02-13-2010, 12:26 AM
It does! definetily and it mixes well with mezcal too and with cachaca and gin and of course, vodka but i havent tried that one bec i dont like vodka. So conclusion is that Ting is a universal cocktail redeemer.
