Oh my god.
today i had my first kiss from the sagatiba preciosa and fell in instant love with it.
the rep from sagatiba come around to the bar where i work today and i start to talk with him about the preciosa when suddenly he pull a bottle out of his bag and ask me if i wanted to try AH AH AH.
Asking me this question was the same as if you ask to a blind man if he want to see.
It smell like vanilla/dry fruit and honey / dry on the palate with a taste of cream
and spice almost comparable with a good armagnac
it has to be the best cachaca i ever tried.
i do have a bottle at home but i m waiting an extremly good occasion to open it.
until then i just have to look at it and remember how wonderfull it is::)

Thanks for the quick review. It's on my wish list. Save your bottle for RumFest UK in October and we'll help with the evaluation.

23 years old for $21?!
That's almost worth the 3+ hours round trip to costa mesa...
Update: Just checked their site. The $21 Sagatiba is for the pura, or unaged white cachaca.

Unfortunately I can't see it going down in price, even with the Global credit crunch. Especially as it is supposed to be limited stock and once it's finished that's it. Personally I would pay for it just to add to the collection but as a sipping Cachaca ? It not one I'm going to run to the drinks cabinet to shout about. My favourite all time sipping Cachaca is Ypioca 160. When I first tasted it at the Ybor event in 2007, it was embarrassing, as it was so far ahead of the other aged Cachaca's in the competition.

I concur. That cachaзa on that day stood out from the crowd like a whale in a fish bowl. Unbelievable. Since it commemorates the 160th anniversary of that esteemed company, it had to make the ultimate statement in cachaзa -- and it did.

Hi all,
The Sagatiba Preciosa story is a lot more involved than just finding it and bottling it.
Here is the story.....(this is the official Press Release which I wrote with our Master Distiller)
“Slightly golden and amber color. Roasted coconut, dried plum and raisin aroma, as well as a special touch of honey and vanilla. Its subtle and rich initial flavor leads to an impeccable almost dry taste, from medium to full-bodied. Flavours of honey and cream, raisins and delicate condiments announce a lasting impression of creamy vanilla, honey and condiment – an elegant aged sugar cane spirit, with perfect balance, strength and charm.” – Beverage Testing Institute of Chicago 2005
Never before, in cachaças five hundred year history, have such impassioned statements been attributed to a cachaça. Sagatiba Preciosa is a unique, rare and one-off spirit with an incredible heritage and story, never to be recreated.
Sagatiba Preciosa is a limited edition of a rare lot of cachaça. In 1982, a quantity of copper pot distilled, ‘white’ cachaça was laid down in French limousine oak casks that were brought from France to Brazil almost a century ago. Forgotten about, these casks lay undisturbed at one of Brazil’s oldest distilleries, Engenho Central, in the city of Ribeirão Preto. In 2004, twenty-three years later, the casks were uncovered and the contents filtered and purified according to the strictest international quality standards.
On completion of this process, a sample was sent for analyses in Chicago at the Beverage Testing Institute (BTI), one of the most important and respected institutions for the analyses of spirits in the world. The Platinum Medal was awarded to Sagatiba Preciosa having scored 96 points out of 100, placing it in the Superlative Category, within which there are only twenty-five other spirits in the world. An accolade of which Sagatiba is justifiably proud.
Sagatiba is presented in a distinguished bottle developed by Saverglass of Paris. Saverglass is recognised as one of the world’s foremost glass packaging companies with a rich and traditional heritage. Such is the quality of Sagatiba Preciosa, combined with the distinctive and bespoke bottle, the first ten were offered for auction, in the Finest and Rarest Wines category, at the prestigious Christie’s of London, Amsterdam and Paris auction houses. They fetched the highest recorded prices for cachaça, ever.
Sagatiba Preciosa is available in Great Britain, Brazil, Germany, Portugal, Holland and Australia on a limited annual allocation such is the uniqueness of one of the world’s “Superlative” spirits.

That's just too much to 'just drink it' !

The preciosa seems really interesting. I have both the regular one and the velha at home and must say they are in another league than the standard #51 and Pitu found in most bars here in Norway.

Is this, or will it be available in the US? I just read a review on it and it sounds great. Expensive? Yes, however many aged spirits fall in the same price category.

Preciosa is available on a limited basis in the US. I'm a bit confused by this one as it was bought by the people that own Sagatiba and though they didn't distill it and it will no longer be available they are marketing it in the US.

Thanks Ed. I've did some preliminary searches and so far nothing has come up. It seems to be widely available in the UK however.

Hi Jamie76,
Sagatiba Preciosa is available in the US. It's with Southern Wine & Spirits. If you work in or own a bar, then it's easy to order. If not, it's a bit harder to come by as we have a strict allocation of bottles to each country every year.
I hope that helps.....! Saúde!

I can help clear that up.....
The reason we have it is that the distillate was produced and laid down by the Father of our Master Distiller. The reason that it will, one day, no longer be available is that we only saved/rescued/recovered a finite amount. When it's gone, it's gone!
If you have any more specific questions, I'm very, very happy to answer them.
Cheers Ed

Thank you for the information John. I'm heading to California next week and hope we can meet. In regards to Southern Wine and Spirits, I wish it was as easy as just calling them up and ordering products, but if you're a bar or retail shop owner you may have to make a few phone calls or send John an email and he'll sort it out.
Thanks also for the clarification of where the Preciosa came from. I've heard several different stories about that product but coming the global brand ambassador, I'll take it as the answer I've been looking for.

Hi Ed,
It'd be GREAT to meet up. I have Preciosa open at home for tasting!!! What are you dates? I'm in London 15th - 17th and then in Miami 17th - 23rd and then back here to LA on the 23rd. If that works, let's get something firmed up...

OK So let me get this right. It the Sagatiba Preciosa that everyone is talking about here, not the Pura? I ask because I just saw 2 bottles of the Pura yesterday in a random liquor store on our many searches for those unseen rums. The bottle was priced at $30.00. I have a couple of bottles of different Cachaca and never really liked them so I tend to stay away from them so I didn't buy it. Should I go back and get it? They also had 6 bottles of the Pyrat "Pistol" new label priced at $16.99, and 2 bottles of the Bacardi Ciclon' at $12.99. Those were mainly the ones you don't see much around here. So I came home with both bottles of the Ciclon' because it hasn't been made in years and a bottle of the "Pistol".

If you found Preciosa for $30.00 you probably should buy every bottle available. Unfortunately, Pura is not Preciosa.
