I had the opportunity to visit this landlocked yacht club in Walnut Creek, California. Kevin, the executive chef and owner happened to be serving some of his afternoon regulars and before I knew it we were talking about the islands and the good ole days when Cruzan rum was less than a dollar a bottle in St Thomas.
Things have changed and now Kevin is running a very nice bar and restaurant with an impressive collection of rums. Everything from the bar, varnished teak and holly to the photos signed by Virgin Islands sailing legend Peter Holmberg tell you that this is more than just a wannabe watering hole for sailors.
Kevin spent more than a decade in the islands, educating himself on a variety of rums so his collection is for drinking and not just as a showpiece of the back bar.
Over the course of a few samples and a ti punch, we decided to do a rum dinner sometime this summer at the Walnut Creek Yacht Club without any corporate sponsors.
