Rum Verschnitt

Dear Group,

this is a uniquely German product that I have always been a bit distainful of but recently drank some great ones... Robinson especially.

Any thoughts on this high esther lovely...

Rum Verschnitt is a mixture from Rum, Water and neutral Alcohol. which contains at least 5% Rum. Most people drink it as a Grog. there`re a lot on the german market and some of them are good. Robinson offers only pure Jamaica Rum since 2005. i don`t see a need for a Rum Verschnitt.

Its a uniquely German product that is no where near as bad as its sounds (95% locally produced spirit and 5% High Ester rum).

I feel it is a category of rum: industriel, agricole, spiced, cachaca, verschnitt.

Just thought no-one was talking about it and maybe some here did not even know it exists.

Ups sorry about my english. I just wanted to say, that i prefer pure Rum. The Rum Verschnitt is a part of the Rum history for sure.

As fr as I am aware Rum Vershnitt is a blend of 95% sugar beet spirit and a minimum of 5% Jamaican Rum - and as far as I know it has to by definition be 'Jamaican', which would make sense that it is a 'high ester' rum as Angus said.

My family was actually quite involved in developing the category, or style as my grandfather bought and then developed the 'Pott Rum' brand in post war Germany. Pott also have or had a verschnitt - sadly the brand has now been taken over by one of the big German drinks companies, and i am not sure what is happening with it.

But Verschnitt suffered and suffers from the same poor image as 'Navy' rums do / did in the UK due to the similarities in taste & flavor. But sometimes nostalgia grabs me and i do crave a verschnitt grog...

I'm glad someone else agrees with me that there have been some decent Rum Verchnitts bottled in the past and the fact that Traditional, Agricole, Spiced, Verschnitt and most importantly CACHACA are all styles of rums.

Rum Verschnitt was an exception in the actual EU Rum definition( where 100% of the product should be made from sugar cane) to subsidize the farmers who produced alcohol from their crops. A similar thing you can see in Austria, where you still have inländer Rum. Inländer Rum is just alcohol and aroma, no real rum is used in this product.

Where as Rum Verschnitt is decreasing rapidly in volume, Inländer Rum is still quite big in Austria.

In Rum Verschnitt only 5% had to be real rum. In the old days they used normally a rather high ester rum for it, these days a lot of companies just look at price and are willing to use rums much lower in esters, and thus cheaper.

Rum Verschnitt sounds very interesting and something I'll try if I have the chance! To me it sounds almost like the rum version of a blended whisky; some parts highly aromatic spirit and the rest neutral alcohol?

yes thats it; at least 5% aromatic ( high ester) real rum 95% alcohol = rum verschnitt and can only be sold in Germany
