As part of its strategy of premiumisation, Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum has announced plans to launch a rare 30 year old rum in the second quarter of this year.

Appleton Estate 30 Year Old Jamaica Rum will be rolled out as a limited edition product with only 1,440 bottles to be distributed on allocation. With an RRP of US$250, the rum is intended exclusively for luxury and boutique outlets, as well as the global duty free market.

"The launch of the 30 Year Old marks an expansion of Appleton Estate's premium range," Lincoln Hilton, regional manager of Latin America, the US and duty free for Appleton Estate told just-drinks. "It shows rum's ability to produce a strong deliverable and show the kind of craftsmanship normally associated with Scotch or Cognac."
I've quoted the entire article for those who do not wish to register.

I have to ask the question on price with this one. While I am extremely pleased to hear of such an offing by appleton, I hesitate slightly with the price. Why can I get a wonderful 18 to 25 yr old product for the very agreeable price of $40 to $60, and a 30yr is Almost $200 more? I don't see the logic, unless they're really shooting for a very small amount of production.

My friends, as the premium rum market grows, I think we will see more small batch releases of aged and special blends/editions and vintages. I am a huge Appleton fan, but I am very pleased with the offering of 21 even at 70 to 100 USD. How much better will the 30 be at 250? It remains to be seen. Then, of course we have the Appleton Legacy rum, which is up there in price. Based on the consistency and quality of Appleton, I am sure it will be excellent. But that price point is pointy.:p

And a special thank you to the Count, for saving me the trouble of registration!

1,440 bottles at $250 is $360,000 gross. After the cost of making 288 gallons of a limited edition, old aged rum, plus bottling, shipping and distributing the product, plus a bit of advertising, the budget seems quite small.

Like the Appleton Estate 21, the entire annual run will sell out in the distribution channels quickly.

Especially as I have 6 on order....
Hey I'm glad to see brands like Appleton producing limited edition rums at stupid prices. (Yes I know I've ordered 6) But products like this will turn heads and could bring a new crowd to the global rum table. Even if it is only because the product is more expensive than the "run of the mill rum". Question. How much in Dollars does a 30 year old Glen Moray limited edition go for ?

Does any one know if Appelton's 30 or 21 mark the age of the youngest or oldest rum used?

It'll be the youngest, consistent with Appleton's age statements

I don't see the logic, unless they're really shooting for a very small amount of production.Robert is right. That and @ minimum 30 years of age, the barrels are not going to yield a high volume of cases. I'd guess that 40%+ of the cost (at the wholesale level) is aimed at off-setting loss. They have to make up for what the Angels have claimed. Not to mention 1400 bottles of a 1-off is not a lot. Unless an already formatted bottle is used you're looking at new glass (1,400 pieces), definitely a new label and if like here... registering the product in every market it is to be sold with-in. If it were a continuous product the price could be eased as production could make up the initial costs over time/volume.

As the Minister said as well, Ferraris & Lamborghinis are made for a small select crowd. There are certain spirits, unless I can get in on a deal that I feel really good about, I won't own. While it's nice to possess everything imaginable, enjoyment is my sole purpose these days.

Also fwiw, I'm not sure if others have experienced similar... but several occasions past, I've poured something super exclusive that I know I really enjoy in the right setting, but have not been able to enjoy to the full potential because at the time I can't produce or control the environment.

Nothing is more disturbing for me than to pour a nice sized shot of something rare and then have the experience come off "ho-hum" due to atmospheric interferences. While those generally weren't horror flicks, knowing the price or irreplaceable status and having higher expectations of the experience seriously dampened my level of "enjoyment".

These days, a $250 bottle of rum for myself would require a "Do NOT Disturb" sign. Still I can't begrudge them for making an extra-premium product that comes at an extra-premium price. There's also the obvious that such a product is designed to be a conversation piece, with the intention of creating its own niche.

In other words, I won't sulk if I don't get a bottle. My motto is "Love the one you're with!" At the end of the day, a good glass of rum is a good glass of rum - no matter how old / matured it was, no matter how little or much it cost. Don't worry; Be happy.

Any updates? As at early July it appeared as though it's still not released yet. I'm itching to try to get my hands on some soon as know it's released.
