In the local Albertson's grocery chain, a product line of liquor is marketed under the "Origine" name. They have "select" rums, scotch, vodka, and gin. In this forum, I believe, the Barrique Aged Origine Caribbean Rum has been discussed. I even saw Ed's response to someone's question about this rum in another forum. Anyway, I have found that the "Barrique/Origine" name also includes a white rum that is quite good. Think, Pyrat Blanco, which has been discontinued. One of the smoothess which I have had in some time! I believe that the Origine name is a creation for particular food chains.

Up here in the Redondo Beach area there are plenty of Albertson's, but have not been to one in a long time. I would also be interested in opinions on the Caribbean Amber & Platine Rums from Origine. Hmmm, Tequila too...

I received the Caribe Amber as an Xmas gift, and found it to be a very good rum, well blended, smooth with depth of flavor.

Yes, the white/silver of which I spoke is the Platine!

I believe Pyrat Blanco is being produced again. I have seen it at several online stores and actually found it at a local store a few hours ago. The manager said they have it come in regularly. I do not know for sure, but it certainly seems it is being produced once again. That is a good thing; it is tasty.

It could be, but it still may be old stock. Another CA store just offered the Pyrat Blanco at a the low price of $4.99 a bottle. They had 10 cases so I bought them all. The manager was told by his rum guy that a distributor had begun clearing the warehause of all the old Pyrat Blanco, he sent some his way. But, he said he believed that it was a defunct product. Honestly, I hope that you are correct, though!

$4.99 is a distributor closeout through a retailer that doesn't believe it's coming back. Otherwise it would be just be on sale. If the retailer believed it was coming back on a regular basis they would be less inclined to sell it so cheaply and essentially lower the perceived value of the product.

I believe that is a private label for Albertsons, one of the few food store chains which endorsed their rum selection about 10 years ago and is now buying their own private label.

Lucky man. I hope your retailer is mistaken, because I like the Blanco. So far, I have made a couple of daiquiris with it (2 ounces blanco, juice from half a lime, and one teaspoon of simple syrup) and found them to be excellent.

I saw Pyrat Blanco for the first time today. I nearly bought it purely out of curiosity, but resisted at $14 here.
