Haus Alpenz (http://www.alpenz.com) has released a very limited quantity of aged Scarlet Ibis Trinidad Rum (http://www.ministryofrum.com/rumdetails.php?r=756) at 98 proof for Death and Co (http://www.deathandcompany.com) in Manhattan. It will be sold in a few select retail stores but isn't going to last long.

Yea i have seen that...lucky you people who can get your hands on that one! if i was you i would hurry up!
Unfortunatley none of all those great Alpenz things are not sold in Europe and it will take long..
If i want to order them from the US i`ll have to pay 135 usd for the shipping.

Eric, from Haus Alpenz, is pretty busy this week but as soon as time permits he'll post more information on where this rum can be purchased.

I have reviewed the website shared by Ed.

I noticed that they have Falernum and an Allspice liquer. Has anyone tried these? whats the verdict?

We may wait for the Scarlet Ibis to hit this coast, but the Allspice Dram and Batavia Arrack seem like necessities for cocktail use.

We've had plans to make up a bit of Falernum using W&N overproof and one of the recipes found on the web, but put them aside when word of the John Taylor's came around. If the delay persists, then it may be time to make our own. Why is real Falernum so hard to locate?

John D Taylor's Velvet Falernum has had some distribution challenges since it was imported a few years ago. Hopefully the problems are being worked out.

There is now a thread on EGullet on this rum where there is a description of the rum, you can read here:

I ordered a bottle of this yesterday from the website posted here, as well as some other rums (and agricoles) of interest not available in my area and I JUST RECEIVED them!!! (Less then a day later and FREE shipping!) This place is incredible and I'd highly recommend them!

Can't wait to try these this w/e! Wahoo - didn't expect them before the w/e!

Because you live in the freest country in the world, liquor distribution is controlled and only after a spirit is registered in a particular state can it be sold to a retailer but only through an established distributor. In this case the old distributor didn't see enough profit from previous sales to place another order so the importer has to find another distributor and start over again. But fortunately in Ca there are a couple of options unlike some other states.

We haven't tried the Dram yet, but the John D. Taylor's Velvet Falernum was tried in a cocktail last night for the first time. Although we usually taste all new ingredients alone before adding to cocktails, this time it was only used in the mix. Last night's choice, Golden Gate Cocktail #2 from cocktaildb.com (http://www.cocktaildb.com), was delicious:

"Shake in iced cocktail shaker & strain

3/4 oz gin (2 cl, 3/16 gills)
3/4 oz light rum (2 cl, 3/16 gills)
1/4 oz 151 rum (6 dashes, 1/16 gills)
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice (1.5 cl, 1/8 gills)
1/2 oz falernum (1.5 cl, 1/8 gills)
1/2 oz creme de cacao, light (1.5 cl, 1/8 gills)

Add orange slice curled on rim

Serve in a cocktail glass (4.5 oz)"

The Falernum added depth and interest to the mixture. The balanced mix of elements made for a refreshing potion, with Broker's Gin, Cruzan Light (2 yr.) and Lemon Hart 151. We'll post impressions again after tasting the Falernum alone. Please bear in mind that our only previous try was of Martin Cate's housemade (excellent, but strong on clove).

I suppose that depends on which side of the distribution mess one is.

CA distribution, especially with regards to rum... has been, well frustrating to say the least.

It may offer some small comfort to know that some members (oneself included) are now quite eager to try Sgt. Classick Rum as soon as it becomes available.

Perhaps the good folks at Haus Alpenz, who released the Scarlet Ibis, et al, which were the subject of this thread, might have some insight with regards to entering the market for rum in California. Their Batavia Arrack, for instance, is even on the shelves at some of our local BevMo locations.

It does comfort.. And i can only hope that once we do get all sorted out, the general public will enjoy our rum as much as we do.... but again... I'm kind of biased :)
