Just read a great article of Rum Agricole in a magazine called Drinks. It references a guy named Ed Hamilton (is that you Ed?). I really enjoy Depaz, what other Rum Agricole is similar?

They found me again. I've written for Drinks and have talked to a number of people about rhum agricole for more magazines than I can count and some of the articles have actually been published.
As for what is similar to Depaz Blue Cane Amber Rum, La Favorite Ambre is the closest you'll find to Depaz though Neisson Eleve Sous Bois has more nutty wood flavor than either of the other two. Depaz is diluted to 90 proof for the US market, the amber rhum agricole from Depaz is bottled at 100 proof on Martinique. Both La Favorite and Neisson amber rhums are bottled at 100 proof under the US and French labels and the rhums are identical for both markets, the labels had to have the word RUM added to satisfy the TTB in the freest country in the world.

And what about Depaz blanc? the one i have is bottled in Martinique at 100 proof, is that one sold in the Us at the same proof? which other blanc is most similar to this one ?

In the US, Depaz is imported by a company called Kobrand and they don't import any white rhum agricole to the US. What you have in Sweden at 100 proof is the same as what is sold on Martinique.
Spent the last few evenings with a bottle of Depaz. I really enjoy it.
I obviously need to explore deeper into this whole rhum agricole scene...

Dood, apart from the obvious wonderful Ti punch and Punch vieux, try scooping out a Pineapple, muddle some of the fruit in a mixing glass, add the juice of 2 limes, 2 tblsp honey-mix, 5 ml orgeat, 25ml 100 proof agricole blanc, 25 ml aged agricole and shake with ice very quickly. Fill the pineapple with crushed ice, strain and pour. Add Ting.
The problem with honey mix is the milk solids that forms when the mix gets chilled. Make the honey mix with one part butter (if possible use clarified butter) and equal part sugar that you heat and mix together and then add some JW&N overproof rum.
You want a smooth creamy sauce.
Keep just above room temp when adding to the mixing glass. I sometimes shake and ignore the milk solids..when drunk from a pineapple you don`t see them..but the drink is fabulous!
Or use this honey mix (1:1 honey and water, heat but do not boil, then cool it and bottle it; will keep 2 weeks in fridge)
I'm going to need a bigger kitchen...
I've been away for awhile but I saw this thread on Depaz. I've now since tried and at first, I hated it.
It really does have a tequila nose and pallette. However when used in a ti punch with the proper ingredients its wonderful.....sadly the bottle is all gone.
This rum really doesn't do well with other mixers IMO.

JMac, i must admit that the agricole i use for this concoction above is Dillon blanc and/or Clйment vieux..and not Depaz, and my Depaz is unfortunately finished. But this drink really is yummy, you should give it a try!
I went yesterday and bought a pineapple just for this drink, but when i came to the shop to buy Ting it was finished..at first the guy didn`t know what i meant when i said Ting, so today i went back with a empty can to show. Then he said, oh you meant THAT one! oh yes, its really really good isn`t it? its finished because i drank up most of it...
So tomorrow i will have to sub the Ting with Sanpellegrino pompelmo.
I should clarify my last post; it was hastily written.
I'm currently on holidays in the US and obtained a bottle of Depaz Blue cane rum.
When I first opened it, it really does have a nose similar to tequila. I found the palette did as well. When I tried it with Coke, pre-made mojito mix, etc I found I really didn't like the taste of the Depaz in those mixers. I some what surprised myself as I had made up my mind that I would automatically like this rum.
When I finally made a ti punch with Depaz it was great. I got the impression that this rum was only specifically made to be a in a ti punch. Weird I know....
Sadly the bottle is gone; another surprise was how much the brother in law liked ti punches.....

I know very few people who drink any rhum agricole with Coke, and packaged mojito mixes don't do it justice either. I'm not surprised your brother-in-law liked ti punches. If made right it is a great drink.
I used to bring 5 or 6 bottles back to the states with me with I'd visit from the islands and more than 95% of the people who tried this drink liked it and wanted another. Unfortunately I'd run out of rhum too quickly.
I love the ti punch especially with Neisson's.
I experimented with the Depaz just to broaden my horizons....but in the future I will probably only use rhum agricole in ti punches. Ti punch seems to be the only drink that I found that really boosts/compliments the rhum agricole flavour.

Actually the Ti Punch is the best for the agricole..they are made for each other.
But there are other drinks too that are nice with agricole..;)

I've had a few other drinks made with white rhum agricole that I love, passion fruit, white rhum agricole, a little sugar cane syrup and a squeeze of lime is also very tasty.
A rum Old Fashioned with rhum vieux also hits the spot nicely.

Like a midnight mojito? ;)

Why not? But if you check the rum recipes you`ll find a few drinks as well that are not Ti Punches.;)

Accuse me of being partial but I've had a couple of great mojitos made with Martinique sugar cane syrup, Neisson Blanc, fresh mint and a splash of champagne instead of club soda. In cocktails, as in life, it's the little things that make the difference.

Ive always thought that one of the predominant characteristics of agricoles is it's similarity to champagne. Ive recently started to dabble with the two ingredients. Ill post a recipe if I make a winner.

I enjoy the Depaz Blue Cane, and it certainly is different. One of the things that is anjoyable about agricoles is the variations that they have, how each distiller and blender makes thier own mark on thier rhum.

Edward it is not partiality that i would accuse you of, but subtlety . . .
To further amplify the complex, intricate nature of Neisson Blanc . . .
try it like:
Build (with cracked/crushed ice, in a pint glass)
2 Shots Neisson Blanc
1 Shot Pango (or St Germain)
Juice of 1/2 a lemon
Top up with sparkling wine ( i use Cava. . . i like the citrus nuance.)
enjoy . . .

I broke the seal on my first bottle of Depaz last night, and I have to agree with JMac. My first impression was "this is tequila!" I need to try it in a Ti Punch, I wasn't really excited about it over ice.
*Of course the Depaz followed a glass of El Dorado 15 (my first taste of that as well), so in fairness to Depaz, my taste buds could have been expecting too much.

Yes, I just tried it myself and it is all tequila (with a sweeter aftertaste). Pretty nice - I actually liked it neat and will try to introduce a couple of my tequila friends to it.
I bought the package that also had the Depaz Sugar Cane Syrup with it.

I am drinking Depaz tonight. Ti punches... Wow, I am a happy man. The 750ml; is being "boxed" with a free cane Depaz syrup for the holidays. That is a pretty good deal and it makes a great drink.party1.gif

From the other thread (ceramic Appleton), I checked a UK merchant I thought I might have seen that before (no ceramic Appleton) but I did happen to notice this bottle of Depaz rhum (1950):

Anybody tried this or other vintaged varieties?
