Canary Islands

It was from the Canary Islands that Columbus brought sugar cane shoots to the Caribbean in 1493 on his second voyage. Those shoots were planted in what is now Hispaniola. Today there is only one rum distillery operating in these islands which are a popular stop for yachts transiting the Atlantic.
